Got interested (again) in Folding@Home. First time was around COVID,
shortly before F@H reached their record 2.4 exaflops or whatever it
was. I enlisted the help of my Sandy Bridge powerhouse for the
high-performance computing client, but I thought maybe I could
look for ways to increase my output. I found the dual-Xeon Proliant
on eBay for a song, and it was about a half-hour away, so I
fifty-folded my output. Then the contributions started showing
up on the electric bill. I recently migrated that effort to vast.ai,
renting someone else's GPU for the Folding@Home work units, so that
increased my output another 6X for the same as I was paying to run
the Proliant.
I've never done anything with industrial-grade equipment like this,
but it's fun to tinker and argue with Gemini on how best to put it
to use. It does run the OpenWebRX server pretty well, enabling me to
send the whole amateur 2m spectrum from a HackRF and bands from
two other USB dongles. Now I need to see how small of a machine I
can replace the Proliant with, because of course, if you run a 2U
rackmount server in the bedroom, your wife may get a headache. I
didn't actually know these kinds of things, but I'm figuring it out
slowly.
